Our Staff

Generations is dedicated to providing highly qualified staff to meet your loved one’s emotional, social, and creative needs. Our child care staff comprises a team of professionals and para-professionals in early childhood education. Staff in our elder care program have backgrounds in gerontology and recreational therapy.

Support Staff:

Generations employs a full-time Nurse, an Intergenerational Coordinator, and a Curriculum Director to ensure that your child or senior receives stimulating, educational, and fun programs.

Screenings and Training:

All applicants are screened and fingerprinted to check for a history of child abuse or a criminal record. Hired applicants receive a thorough orientation to Generations’ child and elder care practices. In addition, staff members attend professional workshops and conferences to improve their skills. All staff are trained in CPR and first aid on an annual basis. Generations enjoys a lower-than-average staff turnover rate, which leads to higher stability and program quality.

Hiring Practices

A potential employee, pre-screened by Generations Human Resources Director, must spend at least 2 hours in a “Model Teacher” classroom.  The Model Teacher offers standardized feedback on the candidate’s interactions. The candidate completes an interview questionnaire and then meets with the Site Director and submits references before being offered a position. This process helps ensure only qualified, caring people work in our centers.

Orientation

All new employees participate in an 8 hour company orientation conducted by Generations Human Resources Director. Employees are briefed on company policies and procedures.

Specific topics such as Communication, Classroom Management Strategies, Health & Safety and Curriculum are among the agenda items Generations feels all staff must know before beginning work.  A new employee’s orientation protocol also includes employment paperwork and policy review with the Site Director and completion of the 13 chapter Training Manual.

Longevity

Generations’ Lead Teachers are retained from year to year at a rate better than expected for the field.  Nationally, the turnover rate for child care averages 40%. Our Lead Teachers stay with Generations which means consistent, quality care for children.

Education

Generations Lead Teachers have at least a CDA (Child Development Associate
Credential). Many have Associate, Bachelor, or Master’s degrees. Those who do not yet have a credential are enrolled in a program to complete it within a year.  Lead Teachers with a CDA are required to consider enrollment in an Associates degree or beyond.  Internet access on site makes on line course work convenient and achievable.  Beginning in 2006, all Assistant Teacher are also required to enroll in CDA program and complete the credential within one year.

On-Going Professional Development

Generations employs a full-time Program Director and a fulltime
Nurse who offer regular on-site staff training.  Staff is encouraged to attend workshops and conferences in the community. Our staff regularly participates in The Rochester Association for the Education of Young Children’s annual conference, the
Continuity Conference for Preschool – Kindergarten teachers, and School-Age workshops with the Cooperative Extension. On-line workshops and conferences are easily accessible to staff in all buildings and are a popular alternative to access professional development.  In addition, staff is expected to hold current first aid and CPR certifications.
